The most common heel condition

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, it is plantar fasciitis. Common in people who are overweight, overpronate their feet (turn them inward), or engage in repetitive physical activities (e.g. running or tennis) this persistent inflammatory condition can thankfully be managed with the help of your podiatrist.

Typically, plantar fasciitis manifests itself through recurrent discomfort of the heel. Worse upon rising in the morning, the inflammation and stiffness across the bottom of the foot subsides as the day goes on. However, it can increase with activity, especially extended periods of standing.

Treating plantar fasciitis

Because this condition involves the connective tissue between the heel and the base of the toes, treating plantar fasciitis involves relieving the stress and strain on that structure. Fortunately, your Abingdon podiatrist rarely recommends surgery. More conservative options work well for the majority of patients.

Treatment may include:

  • Stretching exercises focusing on the Achilles tendon and calf muscle
  • Physical therapy
  • Custom-made shoe orthotics (inserts) to correct gait problems
  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen
  • Cortisone injections
  • Extra-corporeal Shock Wave Therapy, or ESWT
  • Ice, rest, and elevation
  • Change in footwear to something with better support in the arches
  • Night splints for adolescents
  • Heel pads to providing cushioning

ESWT is an innovative in-office treatment that relieves inflammation. It delivers shock waves into the plantar fascia but is considered non-invasive and causes no downtime. Best of all, it often works wonders when other conservative interventions provide little relief.
