Causes of Foot Pain

Foot pain can be due to many different causes, such as overuse, injury, fatigue, and inflammation of the joints, tendons, or ligaments. If you are experiencing persistent foot pain, you should talk to a podiatrist. Dr. Michael K. Block is a podiatrist at Complete Foot and Ankle Care in Abingdon, MD. He is dedicated to providing all his patients with the best quality care for their feet and ankles.

Common Causes of Foot Pain

  • Achilles tendonitis: Abingdon residents who experience stiffness or pain in the back of the lag above the heel, may be suffering from Achilles tendonitis. It may occur after running or other sports activities.

  • Bone spurs: Bone spurs can occur on the top of the feet or at the heel. They are most commonly caused by osteoarthritis.

  • Bursitis: This is a form of joint inflammation that affects the bursa -small fluid-filled sacs around the foot’s joints.

  • Bunions: Bunions are painful swellings that form at the base of the big toe. As they develop, they push the big toe across the second toe. They can make it difficult to wear shoes comfortably and may need surgery.

  • Ingrown toenails: An ingrown toenail occurs when the top of one of the sides of a toenail (usually the big toe) grows into or under the surrounding skin. It can cause swelling and inflammation and may develop into an infection.

  • Plantar fasciitis: The plantar fascia is the band of ligament connecting the heel to the toes. When this becomes overstretched, it can cause persistent pain in the heel and ankle.
