What Causes Foot Pain?

Feet are our primary mode of transportation. They are how we move, whether we’re walking, running, swimming, dancing, or playing sports. Movement on our feet, a basic function of survival, is one of the first things we learn to do, sometimes even before learning to speak. All this makes foot pain a truly disabling affliction. If you suffer from foot pain, Drs. Michael Block and Milton Rosario in Abingdon and Bel Air, MD, may be able to help.

What causes foot pain?

1. Ankle Sprains are a common injury, due to the twisting of ankles, so that joints move out of their positions. This results in stretched or torn ligaments, which can cause soreness, bruising, swelling.

2. The Achilles tendon is an inflammation of the tendon leading up from the heel towards the calf muscle. It is common in overuse cases, and without proper care, it can lead to microscopic tears and degeneration. This overuse often comes with a sudden increase of repetitive motions that stress the tendon. Soreness and stiffness are common symptoms for many athletes or those playing sports irregularly at high intensity.

3. Plantar Fasciitis, also known as heel spurs, is an inflammation of tissue stretching from the heels to the toes, causing pain. This can be related to foot arches, which are hurt by the natural structure of flat feet or high arched feet. Wearing non-supportive footwear can also add stress that travels to the plantar fasciitis. There can be many causes for foot pain, affecting different parts of the foot, like stress fractures, tendonitis, arthritis, or nerve irritation, which is why it might be worth a consult with your Abingdon and Bel Air podiatrist to help identify the source of the ache.

Would you like to consult a podiatrist?

In most of these cases, simple rest, cooling, and heating therapy, along with NSAIDS and some physical therapy may be sufficient. However, the only way to ensure the foot pain doesn’t have a more serious underlying cause is to consult an expert. Podiatrists, like Drs. Michael Block and Milton Rosario of Abingdon and Bel Air, MD, offer the care you need.
