How To Treat Bunions

Bunions are a foot deformity that appears as a large bump on the side of the big toe. While bunions can sometimes be painless, they can also cause pain and soreness and you might notice irritation from your bunion rubbing against the side of your shoe. There’s are ways to treat the symptoms associated with bunions and live without pain and irritation. Dr. Michael Block in Abingdon, MD, and serving Bel Air, MD, can explain how bunions can be treated.

Treating Your Bunions

While there is no way to remove a bunion without the use of surgery, there are many ways to treat the symptoms that bunions may cause. Your podiatrist serving Abingdon and Bel Air, MD, can help find the best treatment for your bunions so that you can live without the pain and irritation that could occur with bunions.

Most bunion treatments are fairly easy and may just involve some footwear and lifestyle changes. Bunion treatment is fairly conservative and can ease the pain. It’s important that you’re wearing properly fitted footwear that gives your toes enough space. Pads can also be placed on your bunions to reduce friction. If you’re dealing with pain and inflammation, over-the-counter pain relievers can be used as well.

You may want to ice your feet several times a day and perform stretching exercises to strengthen your foot. Orthotic devices may also be used to add extra support and care. In severe cases, you may need surgery to shave down the bunion and correct the structure of your foot.
